Job Summary
Dominion Energy has an opportunity available to join the Probabilistic Risk Assessment group at Innsbrook Technical Center in Glen Allen, VA as an Engineering Technical Specialist I. This role is the entry or developmental level in the Engineering Technical Specialist series.
Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) is part of the Nuclear Safety Engineering (NSE) organization in the Nuclear Analysis and Fuels & Regulatory Assurance (NAFRA) department. PRA has responsibility for developing, maintaining, and applying probabilistic risk models to support Dominion Energy’s nuclear plants in Virginia, Connecticut, and South Carolina. The PRA models are designed to evaluate plant response in the event of an accident at a nuclear power station. They account for the design of plant systems and the responses of plant operators to potential accidents to evaluate the importance of systems and components to plant risk. Risk insights are used to improve safety and efficiency of plant operations and maintenance.
PRA Job Responsibilities include:
- PRA Modeling - Use industry software to maintain PRA model files in accordance with the ASME/ANS PRA Standard;
- PRA Electrical Analysis - Circuit analysis, cable routing, failure mode analysis;
- Fire PRA Development - Development and refinement of Fire PRA models;
- PRA Applications - Perform analysis using the PRA models to support regulatory and elective risk-informed programs and applications (Maintenance Rule, NFPA 805, Significance Determination Process, Mitigating Systems Performance Index, etc.);
- PRA Documentation - Document model changes, supporting analyses, and PRA applications to efficiently and effectively establish model bases;
- PRA Project Management - Lead and manage PRA projects that involve multiple engineers and interface with multiple departments;
- PRA Software Testing - Perform testing and validation of new code versions and new software packages;
- Organizational Interface - Interface with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, IT, and other departments
- Additional Position Responsibilities:
- Performs routine to moderate work assignments designed to develop professional engineering technology work knowledge, technical skills and experience within the functional area or specific engineering discipline necessary to progress to the fully functional intermediate level. This role does not function as a technician in modifying, operating or maintaining systems or equipment.
- Provides technical support and assistance in analyzing and evaluating systems, equipment and programs.
- Plans and conducts work and assists in the evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
- Assists with devising new approaches to problems encountered and in developing engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards.
- Implements technology within an engineering field.
- Focuses on the practical application of engineering theories; determines how to make the designs and plans of engineers work.
- Applies basic scientific and engineering principles and methods, along with technical skills, to support engineering activities.
- May perform product improvement, testing, field engineering, development, manufacturing, construction, systems development, quality control, and operational engineering.
- May perform some design and theoretical work, but does not possess the educational background to function as an engineer.
- May perform same work as titled Engineers, but possesses an engineering degree which is not ABET accredited.
- May provide or assist with technical project management including scoping, scheduling, budget development, cost tracking and oversight of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
0-2 years of relevant experience and competencies in applicable discipline. Basic knowledge of engineering principals, theories and practices. Ability to learn and successfully apply a basic knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline. Ability to learn and design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline. Good oral, written and graphical communication skills required, to include basic technical writing skills. Ability to learn and conduct standard tests, measurements and experiments. Ability to function as a member on a technical team. Organization skills and ability to prioritize and manager multiple tasks. Basic knowledge of computers, keyboarding skills and the use of Microsoft office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and applicable software programs. Demonstrates questioning attitude, problem solving, analytical and abstract thinking skills.
In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:
- 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
- 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
- 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
