Job Summary

We Strive to Drive Power Innovation Through Data

The nature of the grid is in flux. We on the Strategic Initiatives - Operations Analytics team see this challenge and aim to rise to the occasion. Our team mandate is to bridge the gap between real-world system data and provide consumable business intelligence to help steer the future of how we monitor and manage the grid. Our team is responsible for the capture, curation, utilization, and application of time-series data, including SCADA and Synchrophasors. Our work is to steward this data and ensure its analysis and outputs provide our business and the industry with the ability to adapt and meet the demands of a shifting energy landscape. We seek the curious and creative, the self-motivated, and those driven by the pursuit of driving change.

We Seek Expertise in Power Systems, Data Analysis, and Development

Our team is seeking an engineer with a background in power systems and data engineering technology and development to help further Electric Transmission’s power system analytic capabilities. An ideal candidate is driven by the pursuit of excellence – this is not a job for wrench-turning, but rather for those compelled to identify problems and solve them with critical thinking abilities and working with a multi-faceted team. Candidates must bring the ability to identify gaps in knowledge and organizational capability and pinpoint uses for data and storytelling techniques to ensure we serve the business with improved data-decision making technology. A successful candidate will focus on:

  • Front end development – translate requirements into designs/mockups and ultimately user-facing components of applications.
  • Exploring new techniques to model time-series and asset data. Leverage native PI features or utilize SDK and API capabilities to establish data services and create improved functionality for end users.
  • Forging new relationships across the organization in search of applicable use cases to apply time series data as a backbone for analysis, decision-making and building out solutions.
  • Ensuring uptime and proper operation of our PI system resources to certify current and future state operations of PI are nominally operational for the organization.
  • Continuous learning: whether it’s new technologies or growth in our company’s vertical, our most successful team members are those who have an insatiable desire to learn and improve

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

  • Engineer – 2-5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Sr. Engineer – 5-8+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Staff Engineer – 10+ years of relevant engineering experience. (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

  • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory. Ability to apply these theories and concepts to complex problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, and operate independently while aligning to the joint mission of our team.
  • Front-end Development & Data Analysis: Interrogating data and carefully posing the right questions to produce insightful and high impact outputs. Candidates should possess strong analytic skills and have a history of using programmatic languages to create data analyses and visualizations that answer specific and properly posed questions. A strong candidate will demonstrate proficiency in developing tools including but not limited to Python, C#, R Studio, Advanced Excel, Visual Basic, SQL, and/or ArcGIS.
  • Power Systems Knowledge (preferred but not required): We deal with transmission systems data. A candidate with power systems acumen will have a more streamlined entry to posing the right engineering questions and devising highly applicable analytic results – we will look for candidates with a demonstrated history in professional training and development in this area.
  • Time Series Data Engineering (preferred but not required): Much of our PI technology is operated and maintained by our Information Technology team; it is our team’s responsibility to ensure the proper guidance of business requirements to deliver the right core capabilities to the business. Having an understanding of AVEVA PI technology features would be beneficial for this role. This includes PI Data Archive, PI SDK, PI AF SDK, PI system administrator, and Visual Studio .NET.
  • The candidate should demonstrate effective decision-making and problem solving skills, as well as excellent professional ethics.
