Job Summary

Dominion Energy is seeking to fill multiple positions which will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities. Candidates are to indicate their preference/s at which level they are applying for as well (please select all which candidate would like to be considered for).
All positions are located in Glen Allen, VA. Positions are available within three of our core engineering teams. Candidates are to indicate their preference/s and will be considered for the team which they choose (please select all which candidate would like to be considered for). 

 

Dominion Energy’s Power Delivery Group is seeking a motivated and experienced Engineer to be part of the Electric Transmission Planning Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for working within the PJM Regional Transmission Expansion Planning Process (RTEPP) to assess and develop the long-term transmission expansion plans in order to ensure system reliability, to meet future customer demand, to integrate the renewable energy resources needed to achieve Dominion Energy’s net zero carbon emissions goal by 2050, and to plan the grid of the future. Primary responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

 

  • Perform power flow analysis in accordance with NERC Reliability Standards, PJM Planning Criteria, and Dominion Energy Electric Transmission Planning Criteria. 
  • Develop and maintain power flow and short circuit planning models, including the development of Model on Demand project files, contingency file updates, facility rating updates, short circuit change files, and facility impedance updates 
  • Work collaboratively with PJM Planning, the Electric Transmission Planning Team, and the Electric Transmission Operations Engineering Teams to perform annual PJM RTEP assessments, generation interconnection and retirement analysis, and develop transmission solutions to address all reliability criteria violations 
  • Participate during competitive FERC Order 1000 open windows by developing innovative and cost-effective transmission solutions
  • Develop and sponsor regional transmission projects.  This includes developing the project scope, justifying the need, presenting, and discussing the project with internal and external stakeholders, and obtaining all the necessary project approvals from PJM and The State Corporation Commission. 
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of computer-based tools for the Electric Transmission Planning Team 
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned

Strategic Studies Team: Perform Stability studies to ensure reliable operation of generation plants within the Dominion zone (SS). Perform Stability studies to ensure reliable operation of generation plants within the Dominion zone (SS). Perform sensitivity analysis to evaluate future load growth, future generation retirements, and future integration of renewable energy resources (SS). Assist in the development of Dominion Energy’s Integrated Resource Plan (“IRP”) (SS)


 
Modeling Team: Carry out data mining and data analytics on historical data to validate power system models and load forecasts. (MOD). Carry out data mining and data analytics on historical data to validate power system models and load forecasts. (MOD). Possess a comfort and familiarity with creating, maintaining, and using databases (MOD). Manage the development of the PSS/E power flow cases for PJM’s Regional Transmission Expansion Planning Process (RTEPP), the Multiregional Modeling Working Group (MMWG), and the internal Dominion Energy base cases. (MOD). Work collaboratively with many internal Dominion ET departments (the SOC, system protection engineering, substation engineering lines engineering, etc.), PJM, SERC, and other external groups to develop and maintain accurate short circuit models using ASPEN One-Liner (MOD)
 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience

 

Candidates should have strong electrical (preferred) engineering background, preferably in electric power systems such as engineering experience working in the Electric Utility Industry in Transmission System Operations, Substation Engineering, System Protection or Transmission Planning. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background. Candidate should possess strong knowledge of engineering principles and practices that will enable the successful candidate to progress in an engineering career series.

 

Engineer I: 0 - 2 years of relevant engineering experience [completed and graduated by May 31st, 2024]

 

Engineer II: 3+ years of significant directly related experience (3+ years of research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry. Work on such projects may be accomplished as part of an Engineering PhD program [completed and graduated by May 31st, 2024] on its own or in combination with additional research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry) 

 

Engineer III: 5+ years of significant directly related experience (5+ years of research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry. Work on such projects may be accomplished as part of an Engineering PhD program [completed and graduated by  May 31st, 2024] on its own or in combination with additional research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry) 

 

*Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A master’s degree can count as one year experience)

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience Cont.

For all engineering levels: 
 

  • Knowledge of power system analysis software packages such as PSS\e, PSS MUST, PSS MOD, Power Gem’s TARA software, Aspen One-Liner, Transmission Operations Energy Management System (EMS), etc., is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in power system modeling (i.e. short circuit, power flow, EMS)
  • Experience writing scripts, macros, or code to develop tools to automate work processes is preferred
  • Firm understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including an understanding of three-phase power systems
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of substation components and their functions
  • Working knowledge of the underlying technology used in used in flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) and high voltage direct transmission (HVDC) equipment
  • Understanding of the protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation equipment
  • Working knowledge of substation and transmission line one-line diagrams, and relay functional drawings
  • Ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Office applications
  • Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment, but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments
  • Prefer candidates with Python certification
  • Provides expert technical consultation to other engineers and management
  • Strong technical and organizational leadership skills, including the ability to provide guidance to less experienced engineers
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Education Requirements

Required degree:  Bachelor or higher in an Engineering discipline (see required engineering criteria below)
Strongly preferred: Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering with a focus in Power Systems [completed and graduated by May 31st, 2024]

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA- For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET; OR
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved; OR 
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET; OR
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET; 
  • OR Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
