Job Summary

Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric Transmission (ET) Line Engineering Standards department is seeking a motivated Civil/Structural engineer to support the Company’s Evolving Transmission grid. The primary responsibilities for this role include the engineering support required in the creation and modification of detailed standard drawings, model development and maintenance of all standard structure designs used in the PLSCADD line design software, and management of the supporting documentation, implementation and review of the quality assurance and controls initiatives surrounding new and existing manufacturing plants used in the production of steel structures. The role will be key in supporting the development and updates to engineering manuals and guidelines as well as material fabrication and construction specifications as it pertains to structure and foundation design to ensure compliance with current industry requirements and practices.  The select candidate will also coordinate and provide peer check for any outsourced development initiatives and support peer groups in evaluating the compliance of steel hardware manufacturers with current material and testing standards. The successful candidate will be expected to exercise independence in evaluating, selecting, and applying standards or well-defined engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to everyday tasks and use independent judgment in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications to existing designs. While this position is primarily in an office environment, periodic field trips to Dominion active construction sites, manufacturing sites and material warehousing will be required.

A Transmission Line Civil/Structural Standards engineer would be expected to:

  • Design line and substation structures, to include preparation of steel performance drawings, fabrication drawings and PLSCADD Models.
  • Support the qualification, review and development of dominion strength criteria used in the design and evaluation of transmission structures.
  • Support the mechanical/structural aspect to electrical connections, and forces applied to use of conductors (wire, pipe conductors) using aluminum and stain-less steel hardware.
  • Work closely with project and standards engineers and designers to coordinate the design/site customization of structural elements for transmission line designs.
  • Support the structural component of engineer-procure-construct (EPC) evolutions within transmission projects.
  • Support supply chain in the identification and approval of new suppliers for steel poles and towers.
  • Coordinate and manage the QAQC program for all new and existing steel fabricators of transmission structures and components.
  • Develop, support, and help maintain transmission technical specifications.  Sample specifications include general transmission line engineering, galvanized bolts, predesigned flange plate light duty steel poles, predesigned light duty steel poles, welded tubular steel pole structures, steel lattice transmission towers, prestressed concrete poles, general foundation specifications, drilled pier foundations, steel h-pile and pipe pile foundations, and cylinder pile foundations.
  • Establish an industry presence in transmission specific committees and working groups.  For example, participate in relevant working groups within IEEE, EPRI and ASCE.
  • Provide normal and emergency support for operation and construction evolutions.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

*Must be able to meet NERC qualifications
*This is not a remote role; successful candidate must be able to maintain regular in-office attendance in accordance with the business unit’s hybrid schedule of three days in the office and two days remote.
