We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

Dominion Energy's Power Delivery Group is seeking motivated and experienced Power Systems Studies Engineer(s) to be part of the Electric Transmission Planning Team. The successful candidate will mainly be responsible to conduct various power system studies including power flow & contingency analyses, short circuit, congestion & production-cost modeling, and transient stability to support the development of the PJM Regional Transmission Expansion Planning (RTEP) process. Primary responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Perform power system studies including power flow & contingency analyses, short circuit, congestion & production-cost modeling, and transient stability in accordance with NERC Reliability Standards, PJM Planning Criteria, and Dominion Energy Electric Transmission Planning Criteria.
  • Participate during competitive FERC Order 1000 open windows (Market Efficiency & Reliability) by conducting various power system studies and developing innovative and cost-effective transmission solutions.
  • Passionate about solving difficult technical problems, providing innovative solutions and taking ownership of the solutions provided.
  • Develop and maintain power flow and short circuit models required for the development of the Regional Transmission Expansion Plan.
  • Prepare reports and presentations to support activities of the Electric Transmission Planning Team.
  • Work collaboratively with PJM Planning, the Electric Transmission Planning Team, and the Electric Transmission Operations Engineering Teams to perform annual PJM RTEP assessments, generation interconnection and retirement analysis, and develop transmission solutions to address the system needs. 
  • Provide support to other member of Electric Transmission Planning Team to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Assist in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of computer-based tools for the Electric Transmission Planning Team. 
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Knowledge of power system analysis software packages such as PSSE, Power Gem's TARA software, PROMOD, Aspen One-Liner, Transmission Operations Energy Management System (EMS), etc., is preferred.    
  • Demonstrated experience in power system studies (power flow, short circuit, congestion & production-cost modeling, and transient stability)
  • Experience writing scripts, macros, or code to develop tools to automate work processes is preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of substation components and their functions.
  • Understanding of the protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation equipment. 
  • Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
  • Provides expert technical consultation to other engineers and management.
  • Strong technical and organizational leadership skills, including the ability to provide guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Candidates should have a strong electrical engineering background, preferably in electric power systems.

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 
 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 
 
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 

Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 

Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license

Education Requirements

Required degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):

Bachelor

Required discipline(s): Engineering

Preferred: Masters of Science in Engineering, Doctor of Science in Engineering 

Preferred Discipline: Electrical 

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

For Nuclear purposes only ANSI 3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1 (must be documented on form HR-AA-101)

Education:  Baccalaureate degree in Engineering or related science (Physics, Chemistry, Math, Engineering Technology acceptable if all other pieces of the third prong of the Required Engineering Criteria listed in KSA section are met).

Minimum Experience for the position:

Related experience which shall include 2 yrs; Nuclear power plant experience to include 1 yr.

Note:  Years of experience in job summary exceed the ANSI requirement for related experience (5+ years required for Engineer III).
