Job Summary

Dominion's Generation Business Unit seeks an Engineer III with an Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) background to support the Generation fleet (non-nuclear) with control system design, regulatory compliance, and operations, along with providing necessary field support in power generation.  This position is located at Dominion's Innsbrook Technical Center in Glen Allen, Virginia (close suburb of Richmond) and soon to relocate to downtown Richmond in 2019.

 

 1) Provide technical expertise and engineering leadership in troubleshooting and supporting power plant Programmable Electronic Control Systems (e.g. Distributed Control Systems “DCS” and Programmable Logic Controller systems “PLC”) problems, by providing consultation, inspection, programming, testing, recommendations, as well as the review of work scopes, bids and vendor reports;

 2) Provide leadership and support to meet NERC regulatory requirements as well as other regulatory and compliance related projects, initiatives, and activities (as relates to controls, control systems, communications, and associated items);

 3) Provide technical support in the development and review of specifications, work scopes, bids, test procedures, alarm response procedures, commissioning plans, and vendor reports;

 4) Ensure compliance with regulatory, industry and various program requirements;

 5) Investigate technologies that will improve plant operations and performance (heat rate and environmental) and technologies that will assist in providing control system maintenance information and analysis;

 6) Provide technical expertise and support for power generation and auxiliary power systems, particularly related to systems with interface to a Programmable Electronic Control System, and including the integration of digital devices and protective relays for electrical power systems;

 8) Perform due diligence for plant acquisition and support for evaluation of control systems for new plant construction;

 9) Provide planned and forced outage support.

 

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Job Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of professional engineering experience (post-school)
  • At least six years of directly related Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) experience working on power plants or heavy industrial applications.
  • Experience with Programmable Electronic Control Systems such as Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). Strongly prefer DCS engineering experience. 
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of advanced control techniques including hands-on experience with power generation control systems;
  • In-depth knowledge of industry advances in control system monitoring, testing and analysis of control equipment; and controls theory;
  • Knowledge and experience of power plant controls, steam turbine control systems, combustion turbine control systems, balance of plant control systems;
  • Knowledge and experience of electrical and electronics theory;
  • Strong leadership & interpersonal skills;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Computer packaged software skills

Knowledge, skills and experience will determine salary level

Education Requirements

Education Level: Required: Bachelor , Disciplines: Required: Electrical Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering.

At least six years of professional engineering experience (post-school) and

 REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
