Job Summary

This position will be filled commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education:

 Performs and/or reviews engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.  Provides cost analysis as needed and develops recommendation based on calculations (e.g., cost for equipment upgrade) for leadership review.  Under direction of supervisor or work leader, exercises independence in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard or well-defined engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.  Uses independent judgment in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications.  Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require investigation of a limited number of variables.

Engineer II: Second level position in the engineering series provides engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline. Fully competent role.

 Engineer III: This role is the top progression level position in the engineer series. Includes senior to technical expert engineers, able to perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within functional assignment area.

Engineer II, or III – Substation Engineering Standards

An Engineer II, or III in ET Engineering Standards – Substation Civil/Structural Standards would be responsible for: 

  • Design substation structures to include steel performance and fabrication drawings
  • Support roadway design requirements and review 3rd party designs for access to substations
  • Develop specifications and perform calculations to support substation structure designs (wind loading, etc.)
  • Support the structural design parameters for electrical connections and conductors (bus pipe, wire, etc.)
  • Support project Civil & Physical Engineers and designers for design customization of substation civil/structural elements
  • Develop steel fabrication requirements and develop healthy vendor relationships with fabricators & suppliers
  • Develop and maintain various supporting civil & structural substation technical specifications and documentation (Ex: Substation Concrete, Substation Steel, Substation Welding, Substation Oil Containment, etc.)
  • Establish an industry presence with substation specific venues (i.e. IEEE 605 (Air Insulated Bus Design), ASCE 113 (Substation Structure Design Standards), etc.)
  • Perform structural reviews and written evaluations for foundation and structure designs
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Engineer II: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • Engineer III:  5+ years of significant directly related experience
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Equally effective with working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Programming skills for automation of system studies (e.g., Python, .NET, C#, MATLAB, etc.) is a plus.
  • Experience with MicroStation, PLSCADD, Autodesk Design Applications (e.g., AutoCAD, Inventor, etc.)
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.

Additional Requirements

Engineer II: 3+ years of relevant engineering experience or demonstrated equivalent (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; an advanced degree can count as one year experience)

Solid understanding of Civil/Structural fundamentals
Understanding substation design is strongly preferred.
Engineer III:  5+ years of significant directly related experience or (5+ years of research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry. Work on such projects may be accomplished as part of an Engineering PhD program [completed and graduated by December 31st, 2024] on its own or in combination with additional research engineering work experience on directly related projects for the electric utility industry)

  • Full knowledge of Civil/Structural engineering theories, standards and principles with focus on electric distribution and substation
  • Skilled in use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead.
  • Proven decision-making skills.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills

Bachelor

Required discipline(s): Civil, Structural Engineering

 

Education Level for Engineer

Required Engineering Criteria:

 For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description
