We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

Designer I, II & Ill 
Dominion's Substation Engineering department is seeking a motivated Designer who will be responsible for supporting Engineers in the development of substation engineering physical design packages. This work is vital to support the Company's transmission and distribution growth plans and includes support of projects vary in size and complexity. While this position is primarily in an office environment, periodic field trips to Dominion substations will be required.
These roles will create and modify the following detailed drawings and documents on substation projects: construction/operating one-lines, general arrangement plans, elevation plans, conduit plans, steel details, foundation details, bill of materials, etc. Periodically, it will also be necessary to work with others on foundation, ground grid and battery system calculations to ensure all structural and electrical requirements are met. Perform other duties and special projects as necessary.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Designer I
•    General understanding of electrical, mechanical, and civil design concepts. 
•    Strong Microstation/AutoCAD skills.
•    Competency in applying technical concepts, standards, processes, and procedures. 
•    Ability to work independently with minimal guidance but knows when to get others involved.
•    Ability to work well with others.
•    Skills: Strong math skills including geometry and trigonometry required to perform complex calculations. Effective oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills (including technical writing).
•    Excellent communication skills.


Designer II and III 
•    3+ years of design experience with 1+ years of substation or utility experience.
•    1+ years of MicroStation or AutoCad experience.
•    General understanding of electrical, mechanical, and civil design concepts.
•    Competency in applying technical concepts, standards, processes, and procedures. 
•    Ability to think analytically and solve technical problems.
•    Knowledge of applicable regulations, related codes, and standards.
•    Knowledge of company design and operating standards.
•    Ability to work independently with minimal guidance but knows when to get others involved.
•    Experience with interpreting technical drawings (i.e. onelines, outline diagrams) is a plus.
•    Ability to work well with others.
•    Skills: Strong math skills including geometry and trigonometry required to perform complex calculations. Effective oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills (including technical writing).

*Must be able to meet NERC qualifications.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Designer I: 0-2 years of design experience with a preferred 1+ years of substation or utility experience 

Designer II: 3+ years of design experience which includes at least 1+ years of substation or utility experience is required.

Designer Ill: 5+ years of design experience which includes at least 1+ years of substation or utility experience is required.

The company is actively seeking United States military veterans and service members who meet the qualification: Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, Wl-W2, or 01-03, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined above
