Job Summary
We Strive to Drive Power Innovation Through Data
The nature of the grid is in flux. We on the Strategic Initiatives - Operations Analytics team see this challenge and aim to rise to the occasion. Our team mandate is to bridge the gap between real-world system data and provide consumable business intelligence to help steer the future of how we monitor and manage the grid. Our team is responsible for the capture, curation, utilization, and application of time-series data, including SCADA and Synchrophasors. Our work is to steward this data and ensure its analysis and outputs provide our business and the industry with the ability to adapt and meet the demands of a shifting energy landscape. We seek the curious and creative, the self-motivated, and those driven by the pursuit of driving change.
We Seek Expertise in Time Series Data Management
Our team is seeking a professional with a background in data historian management and power systems to help further Electric Transmission and Distribution’s analytic capabilities as we shift to a new data historian platform. An ideal candidate will identify problems and solve them with critical thinking abilities while working with a multi-faceted internal and external team. Candidates must bring the ability to identify gaps in knowledge, requirements, and organizational capabilities. They must be able to pinpoint uses for data to ensure we serve the business with improved data-decision making technology as we make this critical transition to a new historian for our time series data.
A successful candidate will focus on:
- Vendor management – working with vendor partners and system integrator personnel to develop project requirements and ensure any analytic/application outputs meet the stated objective of customer established requirements. Also applicable are technical project management skills including scoping, scheduling, budget development, cost tracking, and oversight.
- Forging new relationships across the organization in search of applicable use cases to apply time series data as a backbone for analysis, decision-making, and building out solutions.
- Ensuring uptime and proper operation of our current PI system align to requirements of future state resources and operation of new data historian.
- Exploring new techniques and features to model time-series and asset data with both the current and future data historian. Leverage native capabilities and/or utilize custom development to improve functionality for end users.
- Continuous learning: whether it’s new technologies or growth in our company’s vertical, our most successful team members are those who have an insatiable desire to learn and improve.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:
Data Historian Specialist II (ETS II): 2+ years of relavant experience
Data Historian Specialist III (ETS III): 5-6+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies within time series data management and/or power systems.
- In-depth knowledge of engineering principles, theories and practices. Ability to apply these theories and concepts to complex problems. Preference for knowledge of basic electric power concepts, including electric transmission and distribution, power flow, distributed generation and line protection.
- Effective decision-making, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, and operate independently while aligning to the joint mission of our team. Candidate should devise new approaches to problems encountered and develop engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards.
- Strong oral, written and graphical communication skills including technical writing; ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
- Time Series Data Engineering: Much of our PI technology is operated and maintained by our Information Technology team; it is our team’s responsibility to ensure the proper guidance of business requirements to deliver the right core capabilities to the business. Having an understanding of AVEVA PI technology features would be beneficial for this role as we transition from this platform to a different data historian. This includes PI Data Archive, PI SDK, PI AF SDK, PI system administrator, and Visual Studio .NET. Experience with other time series data may prove acceptable in lieu of specific experience with AVEVA PI. A history of implementing technology within an engineering field is a must.
- Power Systems Knowledge (preferred but not required): We deal with transmission systems data. A candidate with power systems acumen will have a more streamlined entry to posing the right engineering questions and devising highly applicable analytic results – while this is not required, we will look for candidates with a demonstrated history in professional training and development in this or other applicable areas.
- Data Analysis (preferred but not required): Interrogating data and carefully posing the right questions to produce insightful and high impact outputs. Proficient in analyzing and evaluating systems, equipment, and programs. Candidates should possess strong analytic skills and have a history of using programmatic languages to create data analyses and visualizations that answer specific and properly posed questions.
