As a core focus, the team utilizes expertise in data driven approaches to extract and evaluate the dynamic behavior of the transmission system. Our ultimate goal is to unify our power systems knowledge and leverage the latest in data techniques to help maintain grid reliability by providing critical insights found in our time series data.
We Seek Joint Expertise in Power Systems & Data Science
A successful candidate for this role will serve as a research engineer and data scientist within the Engineering Analytics & Modeling team while also demonstrating technical leadership more broadly within Electric Transmission. Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Research and development of a suite of analytical tools that utilize high-resolution grid telemetry such as synchrophasor and waveform data.
  • Exploration of new research areas for time-series analysis in power systems
  • Proposing and evaluating new system evaluation methodologies
  • Prototyping high-potential techniques to expeditiously solve operational and planning problems.
  • Close collaboration with third-party vendors and consultants as well as participation in the broader industrial a research community through publications and presentations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience that are required for entry into this job include the following:

  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience with a preference for working in the electric utility industry (in Transmission System Operations, Substation Engineering, System Protection, Distribution Planning, or Transmission Planning)

Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; An advanced degree (Master’s or Doctorate) counts towards 1 year of related experience.

Our optimal candidate will exhibit the following skills, knowledge, and capabilities:

  • Engineering principles: this includes practices as well as a strong electrical engineering background, preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background.
  • A Power system theory: steady-state and dynamic stability analysis (e.g. PV curve, transient stability, eigen analysis). The candidate should be able to extend this theoretical knowledge to large-scale, practical problems to identify implementable solutions.
  • Data Science & Data Analysis: The candidate should possess strong software development skills and frequently use code to solve analytical and automation problems. More specifically, the candidate must demonstrate a high degree of proficiency developing tools and performing analysis using Python and the common Python scientific computing libraries.
  • Real-world measurement data analysis: experience analyzing and modeling of electric power systems (e.g. inertia estimation, mode estimation, model validation, state estimation).
  • Operational modal analysis: This includes the application of signal processing techniques to power system analysis (Fourier transform, SVD, time-frequency analysis).
  • Autonomy and self-starting: We are spearheading a brand-new industry capability; we are seeking candidates with the ability to operate independently while aligning to the joint mission of our team.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Our work will support customers across the organization, strong oral and written communication skills will be a key part of our ability to succeed and penetrate the organization.
