Job Summary

 

The Impact We Drive from Transmission Engineering Analytics
Dominion Energy is seeking a power systems Consulting Engineer to support our growing and developing electric transmission analytics capabilities. Our objective is to bridge the gap between real-world data and physics-based models of the grid to provide business intelligence and root-cause analysis specifically including the investigation of electric power system phenomena. The team is responsible for the provisioning and utilization of the time-series data, sensor deployment, and server-side data collection and analysis. As a core focus, the team utilizes expertise in data driven approaches to extract and evaluate the dynamic behavior of the transmission system. Our ultimate goal is to unify our power systems knowledge and leverage the latest in data techniques to help maintain grid reliability by providing critical insights found in our time series data.
 
We Seek Joint Expertise in Power Systems & Data Science
A successful candidate for this role will serve as a research engineer and data scientist within the Engineering Analytics & Modeling team while also demonstrating technical leadership more broadly within Electric Transmission. Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Research and development of a suite of analytical tools that utilize high-resolution grid telemetry such as synchrophasor and waveform data.
  • Exploration of new research areas for time-series analysis in power systems
  • Proposing and evaluating new system evaluation methodologies
  • Prototyping high-potential techniques to expeditiously solve operational and planning problems.
  • Close collaboration with third-party vendors and consultants as well as participation in the broader industrial a research community through publications and presentations.
  • Interfacing with internal customers or customer groups within Dominion Energy and delivering executive level presentations to Dominion leadership on the value delivered by the team and its relevance to our core
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

 

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience that are required for entry into this job include the following:

 

  • 7+ years of relevant engineering experience with a preference for working in the electric utility industry (in Transmission System Operations, Substation Engineering, System Protection, Distribution Planning, or Transmission Planning) 

 

Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; An advanced degree (Master’s or Doctorate) counts towards 1 year of related experience.

 


Our optimal candidate will exhibit the following skills, knowledge, and capabilities:

  • Engineering principles: this includes practices as well as a strong electrical engineering background, preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background.
  • A Power system theory: steady-state and dynamic stability analysis (e.g. PV curve, transient stability, eigen analysis). The candidate should be able to extend this theoretical knowledge to large-scale, practical problems to identify implementable solutions.
  • Data Science & Data Analysis: The candidate should possess strong software development skills and frequently use code to solve analytical and automation problems. More specifically, the candidate must demonstrate a high degree of proficiency developing tools and performing analysis using Python and the common Python scientific computing libraries.
  • Real-world measurement data analysis: experience analyzing and modeling of electric power systems (e.g. inertia estimation, mode estimation, model validation, state estimation).
  • Operational modal analysis: This includes the application of signal processing techniques to power system analysis (Fourier transform, SVD, time-frequency analysis).
  • Autonomy and self-starting: We are spearheading a brand-new industry capability; we are seeking candidates with the ability to operate independently while aligning to the joint mission of our team.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Our work will support customers across the organization, strong oral and written communication skills will be a key part of our ability to succeed and penetrate the organization.

 

Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined. 

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or higher degree in Electrical Engineering is required (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree - see engineering criteria below)

Preferred: PhD in Electrical Engineering 

*This position is considering upcoming graduates who will have a degree no later than August 31st, 2023

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 


For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
