We Strive to Drive Power Innovation Through Data
The nature of the grid is in flux – we on the Engineering Analytics & Modeling team see this challenge and aim to rise to the occasion. Our team mandate is simple: we aim to bridge the gap between real-world system data, generate innovative capabilities, and provide consumable business intelligence to help steer the future of how we monitor and manage the grid. Our team is responsible for the capture, utilization, and application of time-series data. Our work is to steward this data and ensure its analysis and outputs influence our business and the industry to adapt and meet the demands of a shifting energy landscape. We seek the curious, the self-motivated, and those driven by the pursuit of driving change.
We are seeking a candidate with a mandatory 10+ years of experience with hard skills in power systems, forecasting, and statistical analysis.
Job Summary
Our team comprises a critical part of the Strategic Initiatives team on the Electric Transmission organization. We focus on addressing a broad spectrum of transformational and innovative projects with a focus on solving problems through real measurements, data analytics, forecasting, and statistical modeling capabilities. A successful candidate will be able to:
- Organically establish technical leadership in the area of transmission forecasting at the level of the business and company.
- Identify viable forecasting opportunities based on need, data availability, and time constraints posed by our stakeholders and our leadership.
- Navigate and interrogate an array of available data sources to create transparent, explainable, and presentable models to the organization that can help further our views of future growth around standard and non-conforming demand and system capacity.
- Explore short and long-term electric load forecasts using verifiable econometrics, time-series analysis, statistical analysis, and other known methodologies.
- Analyze and compare forecast performance with actual results, explains variances, and suggests changes for future forecasting exercises to meet stakeholder needs.
- Navigate, engage, and lead the industry in topics related to load and capacity forecasting for the purposes of our transmission related objectives.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for this job demand robust professional experience in both research and applied topics including:
- Engineering principles: A strong engineering background, preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with an electric power background.
- Data Science & Data Analysis: The candidate should possess strong software development skills and frequently use code to solve analytical and automation problems. More specifically, the candidate must demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in developing explainable models and analyses using Python and the common Python scientific computing libraries. Candidates will work to produce probabilistic forecasts and establish scenario-based analysis techniques to help us predict the way in which our system will evolve.
- Power Systems Modeling: While not mandatory, we strongly prefer candidates with a background in conducting power system simulation studies with an understanding of power flow and system topology analysis. Extra preference to be given to any candidates with a background in Data Center related work or research.
- Mathematics & Statistics: The use of black box libraries and nebulous data science techniques is highly discouraged – our company is tackling load and usage growth of an unprecedented nature; we require candidates to have strong statical analyses backgrounds who can provide model explainability to our functional groups and create a more widely understood forecast of our service territory and our evolving system generation.
- Autonomy and self-starting: We are spearheading a brand-new industry capability; we are seeking candidates with the ability to operate independently while aligning to the joint mission of our team.
- Critical thinking: Our team requires an ability to think abstractly, pursue unknown unknowns, and the motivation to persevere even in failure. What we are solving for is unprecedented and challenging – we require out of the box thinkers.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional communication skills are required – translating complex results into widely understood reports and executive presentations will be mandatory. Candidates will be expected to quickly grow into a technical leadership role not just to their immediate peers but to the business at large.
- Change Management: Technical results are not the end-state of our work. Adoption, adherence, and establishing trust in our results is a requirement of a successful delivery. Candidates should be prepared to support numerous in-flight change management efforts necessary to transform how we plan our grid of tomorrow.
- The candidate should demonstrate excellent professional ethics.
Education Requirements
- Candidates must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and a Master's degree (in a relevant field: engineering, economics, statistics).
- Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems is strongly preferred
Required Engineering Criteria
For placement of a candidate in a Consulting Engineer title, the following criteria must be met:
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
- Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
