Substation Engineering Job Summary
Dominion Energy Virginia is offering an exciting opportunity for an engineer or engineering technical specialist to join our Electric Transmission - Substation Engineering - Physical Design department. In this role, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping the future of our high-voltage electric grid system, which operates from 69kV to 500kV. This oppurtunity will be involved with greenfield and brownfield projects, data center related projects, and renewable generation interconnect projects, to name a few. The successful candidate will be able to satisfy the following:
- Motivated and Engaged Engineer: We’re seeking someone who is passionate about their work, eager to innovate, and ready to contribute to our dynamic team.
- Responsibilities: You’ll be involved in the development detailed design and construction review. Your focus will be on the physical design of electrical substations, both for new construction and upgrades to existing facilities.
- Engineering Expertise: You’ll apply your expertise in substation physical design, including creating and maintaining standard drawings for electrical, mechanical, and control systems. This includes developing engineering packages, performing calculations, conducting analysis, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Independence and Adaptability: You’ll exercise independent judgment, evaluating and selecting engineering techniques and criteria. You’ll also adapt to moderately complex challenges, making necessary modifications to achieve optimal results.
- Document Review and Collaboration: You’ll prepare and review critical substation documents, such as one-line diagrams, general arrangements, elevations, conduit and foundation plans, cable schedules, ground grid plans, and bills of materials. Collaboration with other disciplines, including grading plan development, steel structures, and bus design, will be essential.
- Site Visits and Modeling: Engage in site visits to support construction activities and asset owners. Additionally, experience with modeling tools (preferably Microstation and/or AutoCAD) will be advantageous.

Associate Engineer - 0-2+ years of engineering experience;
Engineer - 2+ years of engineering experience;
Senior Engineer - 5+ years of engineering experience;
Staff Engineer - 8+ years of engineering experience;
Engineer Technical Specialist I - 0-2+ years of engineering experience;
Engineer Technical Specialist II - 3+ years of engineering experience;
Engineer Technical Specialist III - 5+ years of engineering experience;
Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory; Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing); Effective decision making skills; Computer skills and application of software programs; Analytical and abstract thinking skills; Problem solving skills; Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems; Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices; Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills; Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks; Ability to work within a team environment.

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
Required Engineering Criteria for Engineering Technical Specialist: Preferred bachelor’s degree's
In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:
- 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
- 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering, or other technical related discipline; or
- 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description
Note: Dominion Energy minimum experience and education requirements may exceed stated ANSI standards and candidates must meet the Dominion Energy minimum requirements.
For Nuclear employees, this ANSI standard must be met, all of which is met or exceeded in the Engineer series job summaries with the exception of the Nuclear Power experience requirement of at least 1 year:
ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1 Education requirements: Baccalaureate or associate degree in engineering or related science. Minimum experience for the position: Related experience which shall include 2 years; Nuclear power plant experience to include 1 year.
