Engineer I/II

Job Summary

This position will support Electric Operations in the area of distribution planning by performing various engineering studies associated with  Dominion Energy south Carolina's  electrical distribution system.

 

The successful candidate will work with various internal engineering departments as well as field personnel in the areas of planning, engineering, and distribution construction project management.

 

Engineering study types include, but are not limited to: electric infrastrure planning  , arc flash, device coordination, circuit contingency, and motor start requirements. 

 

The successful candidate will work with others in the department to determine new equipment specifications. Must be willing to travel to various device locations around the state in order to program electronic controls or assist field personnel in trouble shooting faulty equipment. 

.

The successful candidate will use many different computer programs in performing studies including Geographic Information System (GIS), the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Web Portal, Customer Information System (CIS), and Cyme. 

 

The selected candidate will also be required to present study findings and recommendations in a clear and concise format so strong technical writing skills are vital.

 

Entry or developmental level position providing engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline.  Performs engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.  Under direction of supervisor or work leader, performs routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc. and to develop the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out sequence of related engineering tasks.  Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences required for entry into this job include the following:
 

Engineer I

  • 0-2+ years of engineering experience; (1 year directly related engineering or 2 years as and engineering co-op/internship with Dominion Energy) 
  • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory;
  • Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
  • Effective decision making skills;
  • Computer skills and application of software programs;
  • Analytical and abstract thinking skills;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems;
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices;
  • Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills;
  • Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks;Ability to work within a team environment. 


Engineer II

  • 3+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
  • Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position.
  • Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
  • Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.).
  • Planning, organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
  • Effective decision making skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

Education Requirements

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 
 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 
 
Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 


Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 

Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 


Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 


Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

 

PREFERENCE:  Mechanicl or Electrical Degree
