Job Summary

  • Inspect, test, service, repair, calibrate, and install indicating, recording, and automatic control instruments such as flow meters, pressure gauges, thermometers, regulators, and similar components in a power station.
  • Locate cause of defective performance of instruments, report findings to supervisor, and replace component parts as required.
  • Use portable pressure gauges, manometer, and other similar test equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance.
  • Test flue gas, read meters, and record data as required. 
  • Perform tuning tasks on single loop controls.
  • Maintain and perform necessary changes to drawings related to instrumentation.

 

Specific business unit duties may include the following:

  • Responsible for performing maintenance, troubleshooting, inspection, testing, calibration and repair of instrumentation and control systems within offshore wind farms.
  • The role involves maintaining and optimizing the operation of systems of the wind turbines (both on and offshore substations) such as sensors, transmitters, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in operations.
  • The technician will apply working knowledge of the operations and maintenance of instrumentation systems.
  • In addition to technical tasks, the technician plays and active role in ensuring compliance with safety procedures and regularity standards, such as NERC, and contributes to daily reporting through operations logbooks and ensures all work adheres to industry standards.
  • This position demands a proactive and safety-conscious approach to working in a challenging and dynamic offshore environment, ensuring the reliability and safety of critical wind generation systems while adhering to industry standards and best practices.
  • Understanding of the basic electric grid, including transmission and substation operations, as well as knowledge of NERC compliance, including evidence collection and documentation, is essential for maintaining the integrity and regulatory compliance of offshore wind operations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

Instrument Technician I

  • 0-2 years relevant experience in mechanical electrical, and instrumentation work.
    • (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

 

Instrument Technician II

  • 2 + years of relevant experience in instrumentation and controls work.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot various components. 
  • Ability to utilize configuration drawings.
    • (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

 

Instrument Technician III

  • 5 + years of relevant experience in instrumentation and controls work.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot various components.
  • Ability to utilize configuration drawings.
    • (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Experience Continued

Technical Skills: 

  • Mastery of AC and DC instrumentation theory and practical applications.
  • Ability to work on advanced control systems, with strong experience in diagnosing and resolving complex issues in instrumentation and control loops.
  • Expertise in interpreting and creating complex schematics, instrumentation diagrams, and detailed control system designs.
  • High-level proficiency in calibrating, installing, and optimizing advanced instrumentation systems for peak performance.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and their integration with offshore operations for monitoring, data collection, and analysis.

Compliance and NERC Standards: 

  • Extensive knowledge of North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards and how they apply to offshore wind energy operations.
  • Proven experience in gathering, documenting, and presenting compliance evidence for audits and inspections.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and the ability to lead efforts in ensuring offshore wind operations are in full compliance with NERC and other relevant regulations.
  • Participation in compliance audits and knowledge of how offshore systems integrate with grid reliability standards are critical.

Electric Grid and Substation Knowledge: 

  • Expert understanding of how offshore wind energy is transmitted to the grid and the role of offshore substations in this process.
  • Ability to work closely with electrical teams on issues related to substations, transmission lines, and grid interconnectivity to ensure optimal performance and compliance.

Daily Reporting and Recordkeeping:

  • Helps maintain daily operations logbooks by documenting tasks, maintenance activities, and repairs completed during shifts.

Internal and External Compliance to Safety Standards:

  • Follows internal safety protocols and external regulatory guidelines while performing tasks in the offshore environment.
  • Assists in maintaining safety standards, attending training sessions, and adhering to industry regulations.

Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Proven ability to mentor and level one and two technicians in advanced instrumentation techniques, regulatory compliance, and offshore operational protocols.
  • Capable of managing and leading small-scale projects, particularly in complex offshore environments, ensuring that both technical and safety standards are met.

Tools & Equipment: 

  • Expertise in using all advanced diagnostic tools and calibration equipment necessary for complex offshore instrumentation systems.
  • Expertise with insulation resistance testers, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and offshore-rated PPE.
  • Experience with specialized calibration tools for sensors and instrumentation.
  • Deep understanding of offshore-rated PPE and safety equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be physically fit to work in an offshore environment, including the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and under adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work on vessels and offshore platforms and perform tasks requiring heavy lifting and prolonged standing.
  • Respirator qualification and the ability to wear full-body harness are required.

Education Requirements

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education: Associate

Instrument Technician I

  • 0+ years relevant experience in mechanical electrical, and instrumentation work with an Associates degree.
  • 2+ years relevant experience in mechanical electrical, and instrumentation work with a High School Diploma

 

Instrument Technician II

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in instrumentation and controls work with an Associates degree.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in instrumentation and controls work with a High School Diploma.

 

Instrument Technician III

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in instrumentation and controls work with an Associates degree.  
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in instrumentation and controls work with a High School Diploma.

What You'll Get

 

Expected Hiring Base Salary Range:

Instrument Technician I: $65,500 - $85,000

Instrument Technician II: $73,200 - $95,000 

Instrument Technician III: $81,900 - $106,400 

 

The expected hiring base salary range is the range we anticipate hiring within for this position. The actual salary offered may vary based on factors such as the selected candidate’s qualifications, skills, experience, and work location. This is not intended to represent the full salary range for the position or limit future compensation growth.
