Job Summary

Dominion Energy South Carolina’s System Protection Engineering Department is responsible for providing technical support and solutions for power system protection schemes in South Carolina.  There is one position available and will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. This engineering position, in the Power Delivery System Protection Engineering Department, will be responsible for:

 

  • developing protection schemes and settings for generation, transmission, and substation systems.
  • The candidate will be expected to possess strong analytical skills and be a proven problem solver in both team and independent settings.
  • The candidate will learn to be proficient in the CAPE system modeling software and will be expected to understand and maintain compliance with the NERC Reliability Standards.
  • This position must engage and interact with Transmission and Substation Engineering, Transmission and Substation Operations, System Control, SCADA Applications, ERO Compliance, Senior Management, and others in order to be successful.
     

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Experience working with protection schemes and/or electrical design is preferred.  

 

Engineer I
0-2+ years of engineering experience;
Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory;
Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
Effective decision making skills;
Computer skills and application of software programs, including Microsoft Office Suites, especially Word and Excel;
Analytical and abstract thinking skills;
Problem solving skills;
Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems;
Ability to interpret NERC Reliability Standards;
Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills;
Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks;
Ability to work within a team environment. 


Engineer II  
3+ years of relevant engineering experience.
Ability to develop relay settings for transmission lines and substations while collaborating with others.
Ability to interpret NERC Reliability Standards and develop process to ensure compliance is maintained.
Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position.
Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management.
Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. MathCad, Excel, etc.). 
Planning, organizational and project management skills.
Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
Effective decision making skills.
Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

 

Engineer III
5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
Ability to develop relay settings for generators, transmission lines, and substations independently.
Ability to interpret NERC Reliability Standards, develop process to ensure compliance is maintained, and act as a Subject Matter Expert;
Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles.
Skilled in use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines.
Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead.
Provide guidance to less experienced engineers.
Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
Strong personal computer skills.
Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. MathCad, Excel, etc.).
Equally effective working independently or in team environment.
Proven decision making skills.
Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.

Education Requirements

Required degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):

  • Bachelor

Required discipline(s): Engineering

Required Engineering criteria
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 
 

  • Electrical Engineer required.


Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Engineer-in-Training (ENG II) or Professional Engineer license (ENG III).

 

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

For Nuclear purposes only:  ANSI 3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1 (must be documented on form HR-AA-101)

Education:  Baccalaureate degree in Engineering or related science (Physics, Chemistry, Math, Engineering Technology acceptable if all other pieces of the third prong of the Required Engineering Criteria listed in KSA section are met).

Minimum Experience for the position:

Related experience which shall include 2 yrs; Nuclear power plant experience to include 1 yr.

(Please note:  Exception to related experience may be made for Engineer I level as work is completed under direct supervision)
