We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

Job Summary

Dominion Energy South Carolina Substation Engineering Department is responsible for activities and processes needed for the successful construction and modifications for electrical substations in South Carolina.  There are multiple vacancies and each will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

This engineering position, in the Power Delivery Substation Engineering Department, will be responsible for designing and implementing capital projects on new and existing electrical substations.  Responsibilities include:

  • Procuring material, project management, and coordination with operations departments to successfully complete the projects.  
  • Keeping projects on time and on budget, scheduling long lead time items, and understanding industry best practices.

 

Additionally, the candidate will be expected to learn and implement grounding tasks through CDEGS, as well as maintain compliance with NERC Reliability Standards.  The candidate will calculate battery sizing and installation needs for our electrical substations. Internally, this position must engage and interact with Transmission Engineering, Transmission and Substation Operations, System Control, Relay Applications, SCADA Applications, ERO Compliance, Senior Management, and others in order to be successful.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Minimum Requirements (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications):
 

Engineer I

  • 0-2+ years of relevant engineering experience

Engineer II:

  • 3+ years of relevant engineering experience.

Engineer III:

  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Engineer I:

  • Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals and theory;
  • Oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing);
  • Effective decision making skills;
  • Computer skills and application of software programs, including Microsoft Office Suites, especially Word and Excel;
  • Analytical and abstract thinking skills;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Ability to learn and apply AutoCAD Civil 3D skills;
  • Ability to learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems;
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices;
  • Ability to develop effective planning, project and organization skills;
  • Ability to develop project management skills and to handle multiple tasks;
  • Ability to work within a team environment. 

Engineer II:

  • Knowledge and application of engineering theories and principles, concepts, and fundamentals.
  • Requires developmental experience in a professional engineering position.
  • Competency in applying engineering principles, fundamental concepts, practices and procedures requiring some evaluation, originality and/or ingenuity to achieve project objectives.
  • Understands and can apply knowledge of configuration management.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.). 
  • Planning, organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills.
  • Effective decision making skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • Equally effective working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.

Engineer III

  • Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles.
  • Skilled in use of advanced techniques and modification and extension of theories, precepts and practices of the field and related sciences and disciplines.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead.
  • Provide guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Strong personal computer skills.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.).
  • Equally effective working independently or in team environment.
  • Proven decision making skills.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications for All Levels:

  • Experience with electrical design is preferred 

Education Requirements

Required degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree): Bachelor

Required discipline(s): Engineering

Preferred discipline(s): Electrical Engineering 

 

Required Engineering Criteria:

For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 
 

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or 
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or 
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer license.
     

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

  • FE certification is required for Engineer II
  • PE license is required for Engineer III
