Military Fellowship Program: Supply Chain Management - Transportation Specialist

The Dominion Energy Military Fellowship Program is a corporate internship which aligns with the HIRE VETS NOW Fellowship Program and the Department of Defense SkillBridge program.  All service branches are invited to participate.  SkillBridge authorization allows eligible servicemembers with command approval to participate in corporate internships as their place of duty up to 180 days prior to separation.

Dominion Energy has one (1) Military Fellowship position for a Supply Chain Management – Transportation Specialist.  This is a 10 -12 week work experience as agreed upon by the selected Service member and approved by their military command.

Job Description:

At Dominion Energy, we spend billions of dollars each year on goods and services to run Dominion Energy.  Our Supply Chain organization collaborates across our Power Delivery, Gas Infrastructure, Power Generation, and Services business units to ensure sustainable and competitive operations – while continuing to meet all safety, quality, and environmental standards.


Supply Chain Specialists may perform the following responsibilities, as well as other duties as requested or assigned.

  • Arranges and coordinates transportation and shipping services for equipment and materials.
  • Obtains approvals, and highway hauling permits, for excessive dimension or overvweight equipment and materials.
  • Identifies potential transportation providers.
  • Prepares and issues bid solicitations.
  • Analyzes and evaluates responses for price, performance, capability, scheduling, compliance with order terms, and consistency with sourcing strategy.
  • Manages resulting agreements for price, performance, compliance, and other factors.
  • Prepares and negotiates tariff agreements.
  • Analyzes transportation practices and procedures.
  • Develops and implements programs and processes for improved freight services and service processing.
  • Identifies and implements cost improvements for transportation services.
  • Prepare reports, and recommends alternative solutions.
  • Communicates with field and project personnel, to evaluate compliance with purchase contracts.
  • Resolves service issues.
Military Fellowship Work Plan and Related Training Summary:
  • Learn an overview of Dominion Energy and business operating segments.
  • Learn about company’s core values and commitments.
  • Meet, shadow and understand the roles of the Supply Chain Management Department including the following:
    • Transportation group
    • Freight invoices
    • Permitted loads / Less than Truck Load (LTL) / Expedited shipments
    • Safety and Environmental compliance
    • US Dept. of Transportation (DOT) /Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements
    • Daily Dispatch records
    • Warehouse & Repair Shop activities
  • Participate in site visits to district offices, substations and corporate offices.
  • Meet leadership and representatives from company’s Veterans Employee Resource Group. Read and review veteran’s resource Group SharePoint site.
  • Perform additional related work task as assigned.

To enroll in a corporate internship while still on active duty, the servicemember must be able to meet eligibility compliance, and receive command approval.  Once an internship offer has been extended, the servicemember may proceed in routing a completed program application for command awareness and approval.  The internship cannot commence until you are 180 days or less from your separation date (i.e., EAOS, EAS).

  • Have met all instructional criteria outlined in DODI 1322.29, and relevant Service instructions
  • Complete the HIRE VETS NOW Fellowship Program – Intern Application
  • Obtain command approval to participate (i.e., signature required on Intern Application)
  • Provide final notification of command approval to both the Employer and the HIRE VETS NOW Fellowship Program POC

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for this position include the following:

  • Military service members with ranks from E4-E7, W1-W2, or O1-O3 plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below.
  • At least 3-4 years related work experience plus a Bachelor degree, or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education.
  • General knowledge of business and contract language.
  • General knowledge of procurement practices, procedures, and policies.
  • Knowledge of MRP, ERP, and purchasing logistics systems and processes.
  • Hazmat DOT knowledge.
  • Good verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Effective influencing, pesuasion, and negotiation skills.
  • Value, cost analysis, and general analytical skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Forecasting and trend analysis skills.
  • Ability to anticipate, understand, and respond to customer needs.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use sound business judgement.
EDUCATION (Minimum Requirements)

A Bachelor degree is required, or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education.


Business or Engineering degrees are preferred.  Other related disciplines may be accepted.


Work schedules are to be determined by the hiring leader in agreement with the fellow.

  • Schedules should align with departments regular work schedule(s) and may include flex schedules.
  • Work hours should not exceed 40 hours per week or 80 hours per 2 weeks.
  • Military fellows should not work overtime hours unless previously arranged for developmental or special business purposes.
