Job Summary

BHE GT&S  has an exciting Tax Accountant and/or Senior Tax Accountant position available in our BHE GT&S Headquarters office.  There is one position available that will be filled at either the Tax Account or Senior Tax Accountant level commensurate with the selected candidate's skills and abilities.

BHE GT&S is an interstate natural gas transmission and storage company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, that became a standalone subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy in November 2020. We operate more than 5,560 miles of gas transmission line and 756 Bcf of underground storage in the eastern U.S., along with gathering, processing and field services businesses. We operate in 12 states. BHE GT&S is an industry leader in liquefied natural gas solutions, through initiatives such as Pivotal LNG and our 25% operating stake in the Cove Point LNG facility in Lusby, Maryland.  The energy we deliver supports major distribution utilities, power plants and manufacturing. Our premier storage operations provide dependable, flexible support for direct customers and neighboring pipelines. At our multiple interconnects – especially the liquid South Point hub – BHE GT&S services support both producers and consumers, ensuring competitive access to abundant energy.


•This role coordinates the preparation and review all assigned federal, state, and local non-income (sales and use, property and excise) tax returns, tax payments, and tax accruals, in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and established policies and procedures.
•Prepares information for financial statements and regulatory filings. Prepares annual tax budgets and maintains actual to budget variances, as assigned.
•Prepares responses for internal and external audits of financial statements, regulatory filings, internal controls, and tax returns.
•Researches tax, accounting, or business issues related to assigned entities or projects, and formulates and provides recommendations to management.
•May coordinate special projects, including analyzing tax issues in connection with acquisitions, divestures, or new business opportunities; identifying potential tax opportunities; and analyzing the impact of new or proposed tax laws and/or interpretations.
•Assists in training of co-workers and dissemination of new or emerging issues or information.
•Recommends changes to information gathering and tax filing processes.
•Perform other duties as requested or assigned.






Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Tax Accountant

At least 3 years of accounting experience to include at least 1 year of experience working in a public accounting firm or in a corporate tax department

  •  Proficiently performs assignments having the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience needed to carry out all aspects of the job
  •  Exercises independent judgment and decision-making in planning, organizing and conducting work assignments
  •  May receive instructions and guidance on unusual or complex problems and  knows when to get others involved
  •  Effectively utilizes the proper resources to develop solutions and devise new approaches to problems encountered in work assignments
  •  Identifies and eliminates unnecessary work and non-value added activities

Senior Tax Accountant:

At least 5 years of accounting experience or 4+ years of public accounting or 4 years of corporate tax accounting experience.  

  •  Able to handle the most complex work and all aspects of the job using wide knowledge of the field and mastery (advanced knowledge, skill and/or abilities that provides subject matter authority and superior command in a particular job) of the subject matter
  •  May provide input in setting objectives and policy, identifying critical issues and introducing new concepts
  •  Makes decisions independently
  •  provides assistance, advice, and solutions to peers, customers, and co-workers
  •  Identifies and implements better work alternatives and business processes

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences that are required for entry into either level include the following:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local non-income tax laws preferably relating to utility industries;
  • Knowledge of tax research methods with ability to interpret tax laws, to prepare general tax research memorandums, and to formulate recommendations for management; 
  • Ability to research issues and to formulate and develop recommendations for management;
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience with ERP software;
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to provide technical assistance and training to others;
  • Ability to prioritize and to manage time well;
  • Attention to detail and demonstrated active listening skills;
  • Ability to provide critical feedback and peer review of assigned work tasks

Education Requirements

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

  • Master
  • Bachelor


Required Degree (equivalency not accepted in lieu of required degree):
