Job Summary

BHE GT&S is an interstate natural gas transmission and storage company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, with operations in 10 states. As a standalone subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, the energy we provide supports several large customers, including major utilities, power plants, and other countries. Our goal is safe and reliable energy production, delivery, and storage. Our liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure is important domestically and globally and this position is crucial to our continued success!

 

We are seeking a Safety Specialist, or Senior Safety Specialist depending on your years of experience. You will play a key role maintaining and enhancing our safety compliance program at our LNG facilities in Maryland, Florida, Alabama, and Pennsylvania.

 

Your office will be at our Cove Point LNG facility in Lusby, Maryland which is the only such facility on the East Coast of the United States. This facility has aspects of a power plant, natural gas processing plant, water and wastewater treatment, a recycling facility, and a natural gas liquefaction facility.

 

Relocation assistance to Lusby, MD will be provided. This position is directly responsible for overseeing and ensuring adherence to our safety program and using innovative techniques to ensure continuous improvement. You will work in a non-supervisory capacity with a team of professionals to set and meet safety program goals.

 

Some of your daily tasks will include:

 

  •  Ensuring field safety compliance at the Cove Point LNG, JAX LNG, Towanda LNG and Trussville LNG facilities through routine assessments.
  •  Developing and providing recommendations for process improvements based on field observations, input from plant staff, and lessons learned from our industry or other business units.
  •  Conducting safety assessments to ensure compliance and providing recommendations for process improvements.
  •  Preparing and submitting safety reports for assigned facilities and developing internal safety metrics for tracking safety performance.
  •  Resolving safety compliance issues in coordination with Engineering and Operations staff, which includes spearheading root cause analyses.
  •  Ensuring consistent interpretations/implementations of safety regulations, company policy, etc. and ensuring site procedures are compliant.
  •  Supporting LNG Engineering and Operations staff on safety regulatory compliance programs implementation.
  •  Serving as the primary site coordinator and as a liaison with external regulatory agencies regarding safety issues and inspections.
  •  Developing and providing safety training to site personnel to comply with OSHA regulations, including meeting participation with operations groups.
  •  Conducting root cause analysis on safety incidents and sharing lessons learned within the Berkshire Hathaway Energy Pipeline Group.
  •  Overseeing safety programs such as hearing conservation, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency preparedness, fire protection, medical surveillance,       etc.
  •  Managing the PPE supply program for employees by working with a third party vendor on available equipment.
  •  Being available (within 2 hours of assigned work area) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency response at the Cove Point LNG facility (on-call coverage is rotated with other team
  •   members).
  •  Other duties as assigned.

Safety Specialist 

  • 3+ years of directly related experience;
  • Understanding of company safety policies and work methods;
  • Knowledge of applicable safety and fire protection regulations and requirements;
  • Technical proficiency in applicable job specific discipline;
  • Knowledge of applicable hazardous material/chemical management and transportation;
  • Job specific knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and surveying techniques;
  • Strong communication, writing, interpersonal and coaching skills;
  • Good public speaking/presentation skills;
  • Good planning and organizational skills;
  • Good analytical skills;
  • Proficient computer skills;
  • Ability to perform accident/incident investigations.
  • Management Services (MMS) requirements
  • Safety Specialist Senior
  • 5+ years of directly related experience;
  • Thorough understanding of company safety policies and work methods;
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable safety and fire protection regulations and requirements;
  • Technical expertise in applicable job specific discipline;
  • Full knowledge of applicable hazardous material/chemical management and transportation;
  • Job specific knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and surveying techniques;
  • Excellent communication, writing, interpersonal and coaching skills;
  • Good public speaking/presentation skills;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Proficient computer skills;
  • Ability to perform accident/incident investigations.
  • Management Services (MMS) requirements

 

Preferred: LNG, Power Generation and/or natural gas related experience.

Education Level:

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:

 

Bachelor

  • Certified Safety Professional
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description
